Holwell and Bardon Hill played out an entertaining 1-1 draw on Saturday but with the home side having the majority of the play the home supporters would have felt short changed.

Honours even as Holwell Draw!

Honours were even in this pre-Xmas fixture between two teams with the same points tally for the season so far. Though Holwell will see it as two points dropped rather than one picked up as Mooney show boats for the crowd taking a penalty only to badly miss and waste the chance.

In a game where Holwell had most of the possession they started well enough with chances coming early, Tinsley rattling the cross bar on 6mins but Bardon were still dangerous and moved the ball about well.

As is often the case with Holwell they press well and make plenty chances but are often so slack at the back. After a free kick to Bardon on 15mins the ball was cleared up field but instead of holding the ball for a Holwell attack the ball was won back cheaply, played out to Eggington who advanced up the wing before passing to Fabio Miguel.

He cut in from the left then brushed past two Holwell defenders before slotting the ball under the advancing Cragg for the opening goal. Against the run of play but a message to beware of the quick Bardon forwards who were finding spaces to run into.

It took till the half hour before Holwell had another good chance as Tinsley and Keast combined well to send Mooney clear but again his final shot went wide of the post.

A minute later Bardon should have gone two up when number 10 Hanslow found himself with a glorious chance but in delaying the shot it meant Holwell could recover and the chance was lost.

However the home side deserved a goal for their efforts and on 40mins should have drawn level when Mooney worked hard to get along the bye line only to be pulled back and referee Davis awarded a penalty.

After scoring in the previous match from the spot Scott Mooney was given the chance to get the home side level but his attempt to show boat with a slow rolled shot instead of a powerful one was woefully executed and the goal keeper needn’t have saved it he could have just bent down and picked it up it was so bad!
HT 0-1

No doubt Manager Daws would have plenty to say at half time and the home crowd looked forward to something better in the second half.

Holwell were on level terms after 52mins when good work by Wells on the left followed by a great cross into the box, the ball was held up by Mooney before passing to Sam Bettinson who controlled the ball under pressure from defenders before volleying past keeper Gutteridge.

A second half onslaught never materialised and though Holwell had the majority of possession they never did manage to break down the Bardon Hill defence even though Holwell had two or three good opportunities including in the last minute a bizarre attack which Bardon Hill managed to clear the ball off the line two times within as many seconds.

Very much a case of two points dropped rather than one picked up and the penalty miss haunting Holwell in the end.

The fixtures have been kind to Holwell over the holiday period this year as they take on fifth placed Borrowash Victoria FC at their Welby Road home on Saturday at 3pm.

The club hopes that supporters in the town will come along to support the team (looking for their fourth unbeaten league game in a row), in what is always a very entertaining fixture.
