Meanwhile across town - Calamitous Holwell have no answer to Aylestone in second half.

With Melton Town’s late exploits engaging supporters at the end of the match – across town all associated with Holwell trudged away after a drubbing by Aylestone Park heads bowed in thought of where do they go from here!

The first half started bitty for both sides as they struggled to get to grips with the blustery wind. Aylestone were first to threaten after winning a free kick on the left. However, Holwell were just edging it and on 14mins won a free kick on the edge of the box for high kicking as Peberdey was fouled. However the visitors wall did their bit and the threat was cut short.

Holwell were still on attack and a good ball was sent over the top for Shaun Smith to run on to but he was slow to react, and that opportunity was also lost.

On 19mins Aylestone had the first real break as Vernon was drawn to the ball on the right but Riley managed to get his shot away going close just left of the far post.

Holwell’s first chance and goal came from a Coser long throw in from the left which caused panic in the visitors box. Bitmead headed the ball from under the near post back across goal where Alfie Gaughan stabbed the ball back in and as the keeper got down to the ball at his left hand post he clashed with Shaun Smith who had every right to go for he ball but keeper Dawe, not happy at the challenge, kicked out at Smith whilst on the ground. The assistant on the far side flagged right away and after a long discussion with the referee it seemed that the kicking was not enough for a sending off but strangely enough for a yellow card and a penalty. The final decision questionable at least!
New signing George Coser stepped up and despatched the kick Holwell ahead 1-0.

Aylestone were stung by this going back on the attack and by way of evening out a soft penalty the ref awarded another one within a few minutes against Holwell when he adjudged a defender used his arm to stop a cross from the edge of the box. It looked all too harsh – just where was he to put his arm from a shot less than a metre away? Cory Holdom scored from the spot 1-1.

Aylestone were beginning to get on top now, as Tom Hill did well to stab home a second for the visitors as Holwell failed to clear their lines at a corner on 35mins.

But within five minutes Holwell were back level as Luke Peberdey scored a well-placed header from a corner on the left sent over by Alfie Gaughan 2-2 – the last match between these two teams ended 5-5 were we going to see that again?

Thinking both would see the half out wasn’t an option as Holwell pressed, Coser nearly put Holwell in front with a great shot from the edge of the box which just skimmed the far post going out for a goal kick.

But Aylestone had the same idea and it was the visitors who went in 3-2 to the good at half time as Holwell stood back allowing Tom Hill to stroll through the defence before planting his shot wide of Challis on 44mins.

With “keep it tight at the back for the first few minutes” no doubt still ringing in their ears Holwell were caught well and truly flat at the back on 50mins as Davoile Riley capitalised on a loose ball as the home defence moved out. Allowed to break along the eighteen-yard line into the centre of the box he held off a challenge before sweeping the ball past Challis.

Josh Clark was brought on with fresh legs for Junior Gaskin in midfield, as Holwell still had chances with a free kick when Stan Logan was bundled over Gaskin took the kick, unlucky to see the ball go just outside the left hand post followed by a great flowing move for Holwell on 65mins as Bitmead started a move involving Peberdey and Vernon who headed the ball on to Shaun Smith in the six yard box, his shot looked goal bound but keeper Dawe stretched every sinew to get a hand to it turning it away for a corner on 69mins.

But then it all went to pot for Holwell as the defence kept getting caught moving up making it easy for the visitors to turn defenders with Crossfield balls over the top Riley had been caught offside at last twice but Aylestone persevered when Riley picked up again wide left breaking into the box before playing in Yaro Phillips on 72mins for Aylestone’s fifth!

Fin Bishop was brought on for Stan Logan and Jaede Timms for Luke Peberdey but with heads down no real chance to make an impact as Aylestone were well and truly in control now. Davoile Riley capped a good second half as he picked up another ball, cut open Holwell before selflessly sliding the ball to Phillips for his second and Aylestone’s sixth.

Not the start everyone hoped of but only the second game of a long season but… it is Holwell propping up the league not anyone else?

Holwell: Challis, Vernon, Bitmead, Dunlop, Coser, Gaskin (Clark), Gaughan, Peberdey (Timms), Hazeldine, Smith, Logan (Bishop)
