Individual errors cost Holwell but Haden shows clinical finishing skills bagging four goals!

Holwell Sports FC 0 – 6 Sleaford Town FC

Holwell were given a real lesson last night in their Kitmanuk Lge Cup tie at home to high flying Premier Div Sleaford Town FC.

Though a few of the goals can go down to individual errors Michael Haden with four to his name certainly showed the art of finishing to a Holwell side struggling to bag a goal at the moment.

With enforced changes due to injury Manager Gray went with a team that on paper might have given a better account. However Sleaford to their credit gave Holwell total respect in playing a very strong side to ensure the right result.

Two down inside ten minutes it was already looking pretty bleak for the home side but they did dig in somewhat stemming the tide and looking tidy as they tried to get back into the game.

The third goal was a killer though, well taken by Sleaford’s defender Dan Worthington as he stormed a powerful header in from the edge of the six yard box on 21mins from a corner on the right.

Holwell had seemed to have accepted their fate at this point but had to get on with regaining some pride and were hit by the loss of Harry Thompson due to a hamstring injury midway through the half replaced by Ilja Fjodorovs.

However before the end of the first half, allowed Ben Greenwood in to score on 41mins followed by Haden claiming his hat trick just before the half time whistle in a show of clinical finishing stealing in right in front of keeper John Binns to glance the ball, the keeper was about to grasp, into the net to lead five nil at half time.

After the break it was hoped Holwell would come out blazing but another individual error allowed poacher Haden the chance to claim his fourth on the night on 51mins with an easy tap in.

However from here it was all about what positivity if any Holwell could take from this beating.

From here on in Holwell did graft, did compete with Sleaford now finding they were in a more competitive match where their target was all about keeping a clean sheet.

Bitmead had come on a half time for Hendey, Foster had been pushed up front with Tinsley and Surridge moved to right back and the home side set about getting anything out of the game as the League Cup sponsors KitmanUK and UCL League officials looked on.

Jack Baker started to show his craft and came more into the game whilst Michael Stevenson and Connor O’Grady and new boy Ilja Fjodorovs also started to get control of the ball more to gain a foothold in midfield.

Sleaford knew they were in a game now even more determined to maintain the clean sheet as their midfield were now crunching into tackles, with one particular encounter, Stevenson and Machin, three clean but very committed one after the other full on challenges in the centre circle showing the commitment now whilst the visitors defence were much more active than they had been in the first half dealing with Foster’s power.

Holwell certainly could take heart from this belated but spirited fight back with the decent home crowd now seeing something of desire to regain pride in an encounter long since lost.

The efforts of the second half did not go unnoticed as many a spectator warmed to the resurgent Holwell pleased that they hadn’t just given up but continued to play decent football and on this basis more of this will see the club climb out of the hole it seems in at the moment to establish itself well in the new league structure it finds itself.

Holwell: Binns, Foster, Betteridge, Surridge, Ridout, Stevenson, Baker, O’Grady, Thompson (Fjodorovs), Hendey (Bitmead), Tinsley. Not used: Cowling, Hazeldine, Nikolajevs
