This was a fast flowing hard yet fair contest with Thurnby intent on hitting Holwell on the break with some fast attacking play when in possession.

Holwell cam closest to opening the scoring on 10mins when the ball broke to Keast in the box but indecision or hesitation allowed the Thurnby defence to funnel back and close him down.
On 15 mins Thurnby broke through the Holwell defence with Brian Quailey whoi held off a Holwell defender to turn and shoot with the ball coming down off the bar and in.
Holwell were trying to get back on even terms and coping with the pace of the Thurnby midfielders with new signing Ricky North finding it tough in his first match for Holwell but he showed some good touches to suggest that he will fit in after getting up to this pace.
An element of frustration was coming into the Holwell play as it seemed that though they were creating chances they just couldn’t get the ball out from under their feet at the last moment and this frustration showed in a stupid booking for Jay Kirkby on 25mins who was lucky not to find himself walking back to the dressing room.
On the half hour Holwell nearly got back on terms as a stray back pass by Walker nearly beat his own keeper, the ball just missing by the left hand post.
HT 0-1
The second half started better for Holwell and they looked on top but another spill by Cragg in the Holwell goal nearly let Thurnby in for a second but the keeper redeemed himself by saving from Quailey. Holwell were definitely more in control at this point with good attacking play and winning the ball more in midfield. However they were living on the edge in defence and but for another two fine goal line saves by Dominic Hallows could have found themselves out of the match.
Holwell brought the score level on 73 mins through Michael Stevenson scoring at the back post after a cross from a free kick taken by Graham Keast. It did look as though Holwell were the more likely to go on and win at this point.
Thurnby made two changes bringing off defender Day and forward Bains, sending on the experienced Kirk Master and Dan Gallagher. This had an impact as Thurnby pushed for the winner but Holwell still had chances to take the lead one through Stevenson who narrowly missed with a shot on 81mins.
However again Holwell undid themselves by some shoddy defending and on 84 mins players more intent in delaying a freekick than watching what was actually happening let thurnby put the ball down take a quick free kick on the edge of the box and Ashley Ray thundered in a shot past the stranded Richard Cragg.
It was end to end now and though all thought Holwell had lost a mistake by the thurnby keeper Duffy allowed Jay Kirkby to steal in and score the equaliser on 84mins.
However just when all thought that this would do, no one could believe what they saw in the next five minutes when the Holwell defence let in Thurnby in twice on 88mins through Sean Phillips then again on the stroke of full time with an unstoppable volley from Kirk Master leaving the home fans dejected.
Final Score Holwell 2 – Thurnby Nirvana 4
