Holwell leave themselves too much to do!

IN the end, Holwell left themselves with too much to do as a brave fightback fell narrowly short in Saturday’s exciting clash at Welby Road.
In a very open game, Prims’ pace and incision in attack belied their position in the league’s lower reaches. They were ahead within seven minutes when Williams’ free kick into the box was headed in simply by an unmarked Turner. Minutes later the same combination almost unlocked Holwell again, the impressive Turner this time running free towards the near post but shooting wide.
In response, Ollie Freckingham’s powerful 30-yard drive forced a diving save before leading scorer Jay Kirkby glanced his header just too finely. And with Prims’ defence looking equally shaky against crosses into the box, Holwell equalised on the half-hour when Michael Stevenson’s free kick into the box was headed in by Chris Hibbitt.
Holwell continued to create chances with Kyle Waddell unable to get enough power on his header from Stevenson’s cross. But Prims stunned the home fans with an excellent goal right on half-time, a slick passing move from midfield ending with Turner’s neat flick on the edge of the box into the path of Fell’s run who powered a shot into the corner.
Holwell started the second half brightly enough, but were hit by another sucker punch 10 minutes in. Another quick move saw Cooper combine with Fell whose shot was blocked by Brown, but Turner popped in the rebound.
Prims had to clear from under their own crossbar and on the hour Stevenson struck a 25-yard free kick low around the wall, but keeper Dodsley got down well to save at the foot of the left-hand post.
Prims looked dangerous every time the ball came into Holwell’s half, Cooper’s pace and power continually putting Holwell on red alert. And in the 64th minute the game looked up when Brown looked to have Williams’ speculative shot covered, but a misjudgement allowed the ball through.
But commendably, Holwell kept going and made it 4-2 when Freckingham, still full of running down the left, combined with Hallows whose firm low cross into the box was turned in neatly by Kirkby from close range.
And with eight minutes left the comeback looked on when Kirkby was brought down just outside the six-yard box. Dodsley guessed right and got a hand to Hallows’ penalty, but the pace took it into the left hand corner.
With excitement mounting, sub Ricky North fizzed a ball across the six-yard box, but no-one connected. And North almost levelled from Stevenson’s corner, losing his marker with a run to the near post, but turned his shot just wide.
Ian Bitmead cleared off his line from a Prims breakaway, but Holwell had one last chance, Hibbitt narrowly off target from a corner at the death.
Holwell: A. Brown, A. Teare, D. Hallows, A. Snelgrove, I. Bitmead, C. Hibbitt, K. Foster (F. Stannard 68), M. Stevenson, J. Kirkby, K. Waddell (R. North 65), O. Freckingham (R. Plummer 82).
