The squad seems to have gone into a run of poor confidence since being beaten in the FA Vase at Boston and it is going to take some work to bring the smiles back on to these players faces.
From the start there was only really one team in this encounter and it seemed only a matter of time before Blackwell scored – what was not wanted was a poor mistake to compound bad confidence but on 28 mins after just making a good save from Blackwell’s Aaron Large Richard Cragg slipped as he went to make his clearance dropping the ball at the feet of Lanzel Reid and there was only going to be one result there as it fizzed past the hapless keeper. 1-0 Blackwell.
Holwell tried to get back on terms but the tide was one way with faster stronger midfield players sending both wing backs away down the channels but on 35 mins the industrious Graham Keast got round the back of the Blackwell defence to test Keeper Smith low down at his right hand post.
Blackwell were back on the attack and were on top with the Holwell defence stretched and on 40mins Holwell gave a second to Blackwell when Snelgrove sliced a clearance straight to O’Donnell and again there was only going to be one result 2-0 to Blackwell.
Holwell’s attempts at goal were sporadic and on 43mins Olie Freckingham nearly got the vistors back in the game whn his strong run and shot from outside the box skimmed the far post with Smith clambering to get to the ball. HT 2-0
Manager Daws kept the team on the park at Half Time – he may well have as the changing rooms at this venue are even more bleak than the outside. However the fresh air did nothing to help the team or the score as Blackwell came out even more determined to heap pain on Holwell – and it didn’t take long with O’Donnell grabbing his second 3minutes after the restart turning in a low cross from the right.
The Holwell heads were well and truly down now and it was a matter of damage limitation as Blackwell were rampant for the second half and with further scores from centre half David Leak and substitute Stephen Cox there was not much more to report.
However there are some players from Holwell who deserve a mention – Dominic Hallows continues to shine in the back four with several good tackles and clearances. Ian Bitmead sticks to the task but had a hard time against O’Donnell on Saturday. Michael Stevenson tries to get things going along with Keast in the midfield but others don’t seem to be stepping up to the plate at the moment – and lets not forget Jay Kirkby ploughing a lone furrow up front the only Holwell player who looks like he knows why there is a gap between the posts and was the only one who could have spoiled Blackwell’s clean sheet on Saturday and did with a typical poachers goal on 72mins.
