Holwell defeated a totally indisciplined Thurnby Nirvana on Tuesday to set up a quarter final tie away to Barrow Town in February.

EMCL League Cup 2nd Rd

Holwell Sports 2 - Thurnby Nirvana 1

In a tempestuous league cup tie, not helped by a poor refereeing display, Holwell faced League Leaders Thurnby for the third time this season and came out on top by keeping their heads and playing football.

Holwell totally dominated this game from start to finish. Thurnby had their moments but from the kick off were more content in questioning the officials with shocking verbal abuse and continual moaning which affected their performance.

Holwell set off with strong intent but on 10 minutes were undone when Rose failed to clear and Brett Marvin was allowed to score easily.

Undaunted the home side got on with play and between continual stoppages grasped control of the match making chances but failing to pull the trigger on occasions. However Mark Tinsley got the home side back level on 30 mins with an unstoppable shot going in off the underside of the bar. Just what was deserved as Thurnby started to implode becoming more excitable as the game wore on.

The second half continued as the first with Holwell well on top when on 59mins Scott Mooney broke through, was in on goal when he was pulled down from behind by Elliott Phillps.

Whilst the Thurnby players surrounded the officials to complain about the penalty and the subsequent sending off of Phillps. Mooney steadied himself for the penalty and coolly stroked the ball past James Flinder to put Holwell in front.

Though Thurnby finally did what they were there to do, compete in a match, they put a lot of pressure on Holwell for the last fifteen minutes. But their earlier total indiscipline and poor attitude did for them in the end and they left very poor losers leaving all spectators with a very dim view of all who represented Thurnby Nirvana in this match.

Holwell's reward for this is an away tie at bottom of the league club, Barrow Town on Tuesday 4th February.
